The MacLeod Lorway Pictou County midget A Crushers captured the gold medal at the Westville Christmas Tournament on Monday, defeating the host Westville Miners in a rematch of their opening game of the tournament.
Pictou County won the game 3-2.
Eric Croucher opened the scoring just 37 seconds into the first period after being sprung on a breakaway by Noah Delorey.
Hayden Boutlier added the Crushers second goal less than a minute later on a feed from Cale McCarron to put them up 2-0 after one period.
The Miners were not ready to give in and got to within one goal, scoring early in the second, but Boutlier widened the gap with what proved to be the game winner late in the second with an unassisted goal to put the Crushers up 3-2.
Westville scored with six minutes remaining in the third and kept coming but the MacLeod Lorway midgets stymied the attack, with Kieran MacGillivary standing tall in goal to record the win. MVP in the gold medal game went to Boutlier with two goals and MSP was awarded to Corey Niven.
The tournament started of on a shaky note for the Crushers, taking a 2-0 loss to Westville. MVP went to MacGillvary, while MSP went to Matt MacLean.
They refocused for their second game and started their run for the gold, defeating the Pictou Maripacs 3-2.
Scoring for the MacLeod Lorway squad were: Boutlier, Bailey Campbell and Cale McCarron with assists coming from Campbell, Croucher (2) and Niven. Game MVP went to McCarron and Jacob MacIssac was awarded MSP.
The next game had the Crushers riding a new wave of confidence in their execution of the game, skating to a 6-0 win over the Antigonish Bulldogs.
The Crushers took control from the opening face off with Justin Walsh, Boutlier and Delorey all scoring twice. Assists went to: Boutlier (2), Croucher (2), Matt MacLean, Campbell and McCarron.
MVP went to Boutlier and Justin Hill was awarded MSP.
The Crushers start the New Year schedule against the first placed Truro Friday January 3rd.
