DIEPPE - The Pictou County bantam AA Selects were ousted early from the 9th Annual West Kent Female Hockey tourney in New Brunswick this past weekend with a 1-2 record.
They defeated Moncton 2-1, while losing to TASA 2-0 and East Prince 3-2.
They opened against the TASA Ducks, giving up the first goal of the game with just three minutes to go in the final period. The Selects pulled their goalie in favour of an extra attacker and despite several good chances, were unable to score and gave up an empty-net goal with 14 seconds remaining.
Camryn Halliday was named player of the game while Jenna Landry took the loss between the pipes.
In the second game, the Selects continued where they left off, dominating play against the Moncton Stars. The Selects scored early in the second period on a blast from the point by Sophia Wornell. Halliday and Taylor MacKenzie had helpers on the play. Patti Anne Tracey gave the Selects a 2-0 lead late in the second period.
Landry, who was stellar in goal, was named player of the game.
In the third game the Subways took on the Mid-Isle Wildcats. Halliday opened the scoring midway through the second period on a pass from Wornell to put the Pictou squad up 1-0. The Wildcats tied the game four minutes later.
Tracey gave the Selects a one-goal lead on a nice pass from Caitlyn Taylor early in the third. The Wildcats tied things up 2-2 with four minutes to play and then scored the winner with just under two minutes in regulation. The Selects pulled their goalie yet again, and while coming close, hitting two goalposts in the final seconds, it was not enough. Taylor was named player of the game.
The Selects return to provincial league action this week when they travel to Cole Harbour on Wednesday, Sackville on Saturday before hosting the Valley Wild in Pictou on Sunday.
