North Nova boy’s hockey picks up a pair of wins

TRENTON - The North Nova Gryphons swept the Dr. JH Gillis Royals of Antigonish this weekend with wins at home and away.

On Thursday the Gryphons met the Royals in Antigonish, winning 2-0 win. Lukas MacDonald backstopped the Gryphons for the shut out. Goals were scored by: Luke Grant, assisted by Tyler Baird and Colin Holmes, while Ryan MacDonald had an unassisted goal. 

Friday's game in Trenton was postponed until Saturday due to weather conditions.

Tyler Baird and Jacob Pentz put the NNEC squad up by two before the Royals scored on the power play late in the first to cut the lead to 2-1.

Antigonish opened the second frame to tie the game, but Cody Haas put the Gryphons ahead and Jacob Pentz scored with a minute remaining in the period to go up by 4-2. 

The Royals scored a shorthanded goal with two minutes remaining in the third but Ryan MacDonald scored 20 seconds later on the power play to seal a 5-3 victory. Joel MacLean picked up the win in goal while assists to Connor MacDougall, Haas, Darryl Wheadon (2), Kirklin Murray (2) and Carson Dunbar. 

This weekend the Gryphons will take part in the Danny Dorrington Memorial tournament in Westville hosted by the NRHS Nighthawks.
