Group walks distance to Sochi and back

LISMORE – Sunday afternoon was a gathering of residents from District 1, but also a celebration of their achievement as a community.

There were nearly 100 people involved that, as a district, travelled approximately 34,000 km, surpassing their fitness challenge goal of 30,000 km.

The reason for choosing 30,000 km was that it’s approximately the same distance it would be to go to Sochi, Russia and back again. They started on Nov. 24, 2013 and finished yesterday by tallying up their final numbers.

“We started this fitness challenge as a community four years ago when the Olympics were in Vancouver,” said Don Butler, one of the organizers. “We wanted to do something during a time of year that it’s difficult to get people out and being active so our goal was to go 6,000 kilometres, the distance to Vancouver. We did it and just kept increasing the goal each year since.”

Their goal was to achieve 30,000 km before the Olympics, which begin Feb. 7. Butler said they monitored their progress with a few different benchmarks after starting Nov. 24.

They had 7,000 km on Dec. 15 and 17,600 km on Jan. 5. He said by having those dates to see where they were as a community they were able to make calls and keep pushing people to stay active.

“When we started we hoped to reach our target, but we didn’t know if we would get there,” he said. “When we saw where we were we started making sure people were still getting out there and getting their kilometres.”

Last year they had 91 people involved and beat their goal of 20,000 km by 8,000. He said he’s unsure what goal they will set last year, but believes it has become a great way to get the community working together for a common goal and being active together.

“With something like this there is a good chance for people to get out and socialize and have some camaraderie by achieving the goal as a group,” he said. “There were younger and older people involved, so it really was a community effort to reach our fitness goal and get us psyched up for the Olympics.”
