WESTVILLE – Next week Pictou County residents will have the opportunity to raise funds for cancer research while throwing rocks at houses – at the curling club that is.

On Feb. 21 Curl for Cancer will be taking place at the Westville Curling Club, running from 6 p.m. until midnight. Their goal is to raise $10,000, which they hope to exceed again this year.

“We set a goal of raising $10,000 each year, and we have exceeded that goal every year (that we have been involved,” said co-organizer Tim Chislett. “All money raised by the local event is passed along to the local chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society.”

Chislett, who has been organizing the event in Westville with his wife Darleen for the past nine years, said they have 28 to 40 teams (of four) that collect pledges and curl for an hour, or four ends.

“You do not need to be an experienced curler to curl in this event – the night is all about having fun with friends and family while raising funds for a great cause,” he said. “We got involved because it is a disease that affected our families personally, like so many others. We also had many friends that have been touched by this disease as well.”

Off the ice there are also four bands that volunteer their time for the event and play in clubhouse while the curling is going on. According to Chislett a few of the bands have been with them since the beginning.

“Without the great support of these bands our event would not be near the success it has been – we appreciate their ongoing support,” he said.

With many other events that raise funds for cancer research, Chislett said each have their differences.

“We think that what makes this event different from other fundraisers is the sheer amount of fun that participants have throughout the evening – some people look forward to this event each and every year as an evening social,” he said. “Everyone can get involved. You do not need to be experienced at all, just come out and have some fun.”

For this year’s event they are still looking for a few teams. To sign up call Tim or Darleen Chislett at 396-1503 or email tim.chislett@sobeys.com.

They will ensure teams get their pledge sheets or they can be printed off the Curl for Cancer website. There is no cost to participate, other than the effort to collect pledges.
