Northern Subway Selects win Sweetheart tourney

NORTH RIVER – The Northern Subway Selects won the 8th annual Sweetheart Tournament over the weekend with a 2-1 victory over the Western Wild.

The Selects finished the qualification round with two ties and a loss to place third out of six teams.

The Selects started slow with a 3-1 loss to Kings County (P.E.I.) on Friday. On Saturday in their first game of the day they went down 4-1, but battled back to savage a 4-4 tie with Western Wind (P.E.I.). The second game of the day the Selects tied 2-2 with Mid-Isle Wildcats (P.E.I.). 

In the final against the Western Wind the Selects got goals from Annika Mason (Stellarton) and Amanda Dunning (New Glasgow) en route to their 2-1 victory. Assists came from: Hilary Taylor (New Glasgow) and Taylor Perry (Trenton). Goalie Jenna McNamara (Hammonds Plains) recorded the win. 

The Northern Subway Selects start their playoffs next Saturday at 12 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. against the Procresting Penguins at the East Hants Sportsplex with Game 3 at the Pictou Wellness Centre on Friday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m.
