Campbell lifts Bulldogs to tournament victory

Three Pictou County hockey players are members of the Antigonish female midget AA Bulldogs, who captured the Sweetheart Female Hockey Tournament championship banner this weekend in Prince Edward Island. Shown with their gold medals and the banner are Katelyn Dunn, Brooke McVicar and Gena Cyr. 

The Antigonish female midget AA Bulldogs came home from the Sweetheart Female Hockey Tournament this weekend with a championship banner.

The Bulldogs won gold in a close and exciting game against league adversaries the Halifax Hawks in overtime after the game was rescheduled due to blizzard-like conditions in P.E.I.

Shauna Campbell scored the lone goal on the power play in the game, which went into overtime when regulation play ended in a 0-0 score. Allison MacDougall shot the puck, hitting the post, and Campbell pushed it into the net for the victory. Katelyn Dunn of New Glasgow also got an assist on the goal. Campbell was named player of the game (offence) while goalie Nicole Grace was named player of the game (defence) for the shutout. Grace also won tournament MVP for the Midget AA division.

In their first game of the tournament, Antigonish defeated the Bedford Blues 2-0. Scoring for the Bulldogs were Emma Boudreau, assisted by Rachael Bekkers, and Cynthia MacDonald, assisted by Jodie MacDougall and Caralena Tracey. Players of the game were MacDonald (offence) and Allison MacDougall (defence). Goaltender Breanna MacDonald got the shutout.

The Bulldogs had a convincing win over the Saint John Phantoms in their second game, with a 5-0 score. Campbell led the scoring with two goals, while Caralena Tracey, Jodie MacDougall (unassisted) and Kara Chisholm had one apiece. Assists were marked by Cynthia MacDonald, Casey Murphy, Tracey and Kerrilyn Kennedy. Players of the game were Casey Murphy (offence) and Gena Cyr of Thorburn (defence). Grace earned the shutout between the pipes.

The third game finished in a 2-2 tie with Halifax when the Hawks scored with an eighth of a second remaining in the game to even the score. Boudreau found the back of the net first, assisted by Jodie MacDougall, and then Campbell scored unassisted. Players of the game were Brigid O’Connor (offence).and Rachael Bekkers (defence).

Antigonish and Halifax finished in first and second places to advance to the championship game.
