The Pictou County peewee AA Subway Selects brought home a banner from the Sweetheart Female Hockey Tournament in P.E.I. this weekend with a near-perfect record.
The Selects faced provincial peewee AA league rivals, the TASA Ducks, in the championship game after posting three wins and a tie for first place in round-robin play.
The top two teams advanced to the championship game, which was held in Crapaud during a snowstorm that forced other games to be cancelled and postponed.
Pictou County got on the scoreboard early in the game with a goal by Madison Robertson 1:34 seconds into the first period. MacKenzie Ells added a power play goal before the first period ended, and Lindsey MacDonald and Eva Wornell both scored in the third period for a final score of 4-0. Assists went to Shalyn Bona, Wornell, KJ Emery, Ella Webber and MacDonald. Players of the game were Robertson (offence) and Mariah Linehan (defence).
In their first game of the tournament, the Selects were victorious over the Bedford Blues 1-0. Wornell scored the lone goal, assisted by Jenna Reid. Players of the game were Wornell (offence) and Reid (defence).
In game two, the Pictou County squad tied the TASA Ducks with an unassisted goal by Reid. Players of the game were Wornell (offence) and goalie Victoria Dunn (defence).
The Selects defeated the Capital District Cyclones 3-0 in their third game of the tournament. Linehan scored an unassisted goal with a shot from the point to open the scoring, followed by goals from Wornell and Emery. Assists were recorded by Paige MacDonald and Linehan. Players of the game were Emery (offence) and Paige MacDonald (defence).
The Selects shutout the Valley Wild 3-0 in their last round-robin game. Goals were scored by Jenna Hickey, Lindsey MacDonald and Wornell. Assists went to Emery (2), Ells, and Hickey. Players of the game were Hickey (offence) and Dunn (defence).
Goaltender Victoria Dunn was named the tournament MVP for the peewee AA division. She posted four shutouts and allowed only one goal against through the five games during the tournament.
