Pirates draw first blood in NSJHL series with Scotians

PORT HAWKESBURY – Friday night the Strait Pirates took an early lead in the best-of-seven series with the Pictou County Scotians, winning 4-2.

Mitchell Warner opened the scoring for Pictou County 5:08 into the first period, but the Pirates answered with goals by Marc Bourgeois and Gavyn Connell-Helle before the end of the period to take a 2-1 lead.

Brandon Verge tied the game 6:24 into the second, but Mitchell Balmas scored with 2:13 left in the second and just 1:08 into the third to put Port Hawkesbury ahead 4-2.

Spencer Scott made 23 saves in the loss, while Keagan Butler made 20 in the win.

Although Pictou County holds home ice advantage the series started in Port Hawkesbury, with Games 2 and 3 in Trenton.

Game 2 is tomorrow night, while Game 3 is Wednesday. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.
