NEW GLASGOW – The Northern Subway Selects won the opening game of their best-of-five semifinal series with the ProCresting Penguins 4-2 before a 5-3 loss on Sunday to tie the NSFMHL series 1-1.

Saturday the Selects were outshot 38-24, but strong goaltending by Jenna McNamara (Hammonds Plains) kept the Selects in the game.

The Selects had a balanced attack with four separate scorers lead by Katie Pentz with a goal and an assist. Maddie Bourque (Westville), Kaila Reid (Pictou) and Sienna Forance (Port Hood) added the other Selects tallies.

Hilary Taylor (New Glasgow) played a solid game at both ends of the rink with two assists, while other assists went to Baille Marcott (Port Hood), Annika Mason (Stellerton) and Emily Dorion (Antigonish).

Sunday, also in East Hants, the Selects were dropped 5-3, with the Penguins having a strong third period to pick up the win.

Annika Mason and Bourque scored in the second for the Selects to tie the game 2-2 after two periods.

In the third the Penguins scored three goals, one on an empty net, while Katie Marcott scored the lone Selects goal of the period.

McNamara made 32 saves on 36 shots in the loss.
