Gryphons draw first blood in series with Royals

TRENTON – The North Nova Gryphons boy’s hockey team played Monday in Antigonish and came away with a 5-3 win in their first game of the playoffs.

The Royals had a two-goal lead until Darryl Wheadon put NNEC on the board with 26 seconds remaining in the first period. Craig Murray evened the game with 1.4 seconds left in the period.

Antigonish went ahead early in the second but the Gryphons tied it again on Wheadon's second goal of the game with only 21 seconds remaining in the second frame.

Wheadon scored his third goal midway through the third and Cody Haas added the insurance marker to take the first game of the best-of-three playoff series.

Assists in the game went to Jacob Pentz (2), Craig Murray (2), Haas, Luke Grant, Kirklin Murray and Ryan Chabbassol.

The Gryphons host the Royals Thursday night at the Trenton Arena for the second game of the series. Puck drop is at 7:30.
