PICTOU – The Pictou County bantam AA Subway Selects have been making their mark in the provincial league playoffs on their way towards the provincial championships, which they host this coming weekend at the Hector Arena.
The Selects finished fourth in the regular season in the eight-team league with a record of 9-9-10. League playoffs began recently to determine the league champion and the Selects find themselves in second place with a 3-2-0 record.
The three wins came last week on the back of a 2-1 win over TASA, a 3-0 win over Sackville and a 4-2 victory over Colchester.
This weekend, the Selects were in tough against the Halifax Hawks and the Cole Harbour Wings.
The Selects fell short in a 1-0 loss to the Hawks at home in Pictou on Saturday. Despite an edge in play and shots on goal, Pictou County couldn't solve the Halifax goalie. Halifax scored midway through the final frame to take the 1-0 win.
On Sunday the Selects started strong and had an early edge but after losing a faceoff in their own end, gave up a 1-0 lead late in the first period. Two minutes later, the Wings struck again and took a 2-0 lead.
Pictou County fought hard and despite a strong effort, couldn't generate the offence they needed as the Wings held on to their 2-0 lead.
It will be the Wings who Pictou County face in the first game of the provincial championships slated to begin next Friday at the Hector Arena. The Selects won the right to host the event back in December and have been working hard behind the scenes to prepare the showcase of some of the top 13-14 year old female players in the province.
The final five was determined by league standings and a playoff between Cole Harbour, Valley and Cape Breton. Joining Pictou County and Cole Harbour in the final five are: the Valley Vixens, Halifax Hawks and TASA Ducks.
The tournament begins on Friday with Pictou County playing Cole Harbour at 11 a.m. Opening ceremonies begin at 4:30 p.m. after which the Selects play their second game against TASA.
Tournament passes for the weekend are available for $10, while day passes are $5.
