TRURO – The North Nova Gryphons boys hockey team beat the CEC Cougars Sunday night in Truro in the first game of the best-of-three series.
There was no scoring in the first period, with the shots were even at seven. Ryan MacDonald put NNEC on the board late in the second frame assisted by Darryl Wheadon and Jacob Pentz on a power play goal.
CEC tied the game midway through the third period but the Gryphons capitalized on their second power play of the game with 1:19 remaining in the game as Ryan MacDonald scored his second of the night assisted by Wheadon and Craig Murray.
The Cougars pulled their goalie for the extra attacker and the Gryphons took a late penalty in the last minute, but the NNEC squad held off the swarming Cougars to win 2-1.
The Gryphons outshot the Cougars 27-23 as Joel MacLean backstopped the Gryphons to the victory in goal.
They now host CEC for Game 2 on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. at the Trenton Arena. Admission is $4.00 for adults and $2.00 for students and seniors.
