Sunday night in Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League semifinal play, and before a standing room crowd only, in Trenton the Strait Pirates nipped the Pictou County Scotians 4-3 in game seven.
Pictou County Scotians forward Lucas Eshleman, right, looks for a pass from behind the net during Sunday night's NSJHL playoff game at the Trenton Arena against the Strait Pirates.
The Pirates will now meet the Glace Bay Jr. Miners in an all Cape Breton Sid Rowe Divisional final, which gets underway Tuesday night at the Bay Plex in Glace Bay.
At the Trenton Arena veteran Pirate David Greencorn was the hero for the Strait potting a third period, short-handed tally with just one second showing on the clock to break a 3-3 tie. Greencorn also pitched in with two assists.
In the first the hometown Scotians, despite being outshot 13-7, picked up the only goal of the opening period when Steven MacNeil finished on a play with Zach Bates and Seamus Boyle midway through the first period.
In the second, and in the span of fifty seconds the Pirates struck twice to take a 2-1 lead on goals by Bryson Landry from Matt Morgan and David Greencorn then Morgan from Kirk Bernard and Alex Bonaparte. As in the first period the Pirates controlled the shot, in the middle period, 14-7 for a 2-period total of 27-14.
Just two minutes ten seconds into the third period Craig Matheson managed to knot the game at two with Andrew Kennedy drawing the single assist. Then two minutes later Morgan Timmons had the lead back for the Pirates at 3-2 from veteran David Greencorn his second assist of the night. With just four minutes thirty-nine seconds to play Keenan Lima had the Scotians even once again at three from Brandon MacKenzie and Craig Matheson. For Matheson also his second point of the night. Then with just eight seconds remaining in the third period the Pirates were called for too many men before the hard-working David Greencorn potted the winner with a single second showing on the clock.
Keagan Butler picked up his 4th win of the series while Spencer Scott suffered the tough loss.
Final shots were 37-33 Strait Pirates.
Pictou County will say goodbye and thank you to their overagers goaltender Spencer Scott, defenseman Seamus Boyle and forwards Keenan Lima, and Andrew Kennedy for their devotion to the Scotians and wish them well in wherever their future takes them.
