STELLARTON – Are you a man? Are you curious about yoga? Pictou County Yoga has a class just for you.
Starting Tuesday night at 8 p.m., the first of six ‘broga’ or yoga for men classes will take place at Pictou County Yoga’s studio in the Albion Power Centre.
The sessions, which run until April 22, hope to draw in those that are curious about yoga, as well as those that are looking for a class for men. There is no prior experience necessary as this is an all levels class.
In October PC Yoga held an intro class for men with registered yoga teacher Steve Currie, which received positive feedback according to owner Leanne Burrows.
“We hope that by offering this session we can welcome some of these men back and inspire some new guys to try it out,” said Burrows. “Our goal at Pictou County Yoga is to bring yoga to the county by offering the classes that people want. I have had many requests for a class for men so broga was born to fill that request.”
Currie, who will also be the teacher for these broga sessions, said the classes have a slightly different approach than a regular class at the studio. He said it’s mostly because males have a more competitive nature and struggle to let that go sometimes.
“Yoga is not about competition, though it can be very physically demanding depending upon the style,” said Currie. “We design an all male class to make it feel more familiar to their previous experiences. Poses often have two or three names so I will use the more masculine version during and all male class. I teach less about connecting spiritually and more about details of the pose nuances.”
He also added that most men, if not all that are physically active, are already practising some yoga.
“If you were to notice people stretching in a fitness centre, the chances are that about 70 per cent of the type of stretches they are doing, evolved from the 5,000-year-old yoga poses,” he said. “Men are already practising yoga. It's just not called that on the ice, or at the gym.”
There has been an increasing number of men at the studio according to Burrows and her hope is that more will come in to see what yoga is all about.
“Steve and I hope that local men will come in to see why this 5,000 year tradition has caught on with NFL, NHL, NBA and other areas of pro sport, as well as high level executives and men of all interests and walks of life,” she said.
The six-week session costs $52 plus HST. To register or for more information visit pictoucountyyoga.com.
