Nighthawks boys hockey wrap up season with two losses

LANTZ – Monday in Lantz the Hants East Tigers boys hockey team captured the Northumberland Region Division 2 title with a 6-1 victory over the NRHS Nighthawks in the third and final game of their playoff series.

The Tigers scored early, taking a 3-0 lead after three minutes in the game. Kyle Sutherland deflected a point shot from Lance Emery to get the Nighthawks on the board before the end of the first period. Brandon Livingstone also had an assist on Sutherland’s goal. The Tigers scored a goal in the second period and another one in the third to secure the victory and the regional title.

In Antigonish on March 18, the NRHS Nighthawks finished their season with a 3-1 loss to the Dalbrae Dragons in the provincial qualifier game.

The Dragons scored in the first period to take a 1-0 lead. The score held until midway in the second period when Jordan Wheeler scored on a pass from Ben Morrissey to tie the game. 

The score remained tied throughout the second period and midway into the third when a Dragons defenceman blasted a shot from the point to beat Brennan Snell.

The Nighthawks had a great push back and carried the play for the remainder of the game but could not score as the Dragons rounded out the scoring with an empty-net goal.
