TANTALLON – Over the weekend at the NSSAF Division 1 provincial hockey championship the North Nova Gryphons boys hockey team were eliminated in the crossovers by the eventual tournament champion CPA Cheetahs.
On Friday morning the Gryphons opened with a 4-3 win over the Halifax West Warriors. Jacob Pentz scored twice with singles to Carson Dunbar and Cody Haas. Assists went to Kale Mason, Darryl Wheadon and Ryan MacDonald. Joel MacLean backstopped the Gryphons to the victory.
Friday afternoon’s opponents were the Lockview Dragons, who barraged Lukas MacDonald in goal with 41 shots, scoring five times to win 5-1 win over NNEC. Craig Murray scored the lone goal for the Gryphons with assists to Wheadon and MacDonald.
On Saturday morning, the Gryphons faced the Riverview Redmen from Cape Breton.
Luke Grant, assisted by Pentz, scored a shorthanded goal with 22 seconds remaining in the first period to take a 1-0 lead into the intermission. Riverview scored the only goal of the second to take a 1-1 tie into the break. Dunbar put the Gryphons ahead in the third assisted by Haas and Wheadon. Pentz scored an unassisted empty-net goal with 44 seconds remaining in the game to seal the 3-1 victory.
The 2-1 record left the North Nova in second place in their pool, with enough points to make the crossovers Saturday night against the defending champion CPA Cheetahs.
North Nova fell 6-1 as CPA put 54 shots on goal in the crossover semifinal against Lukas MacDonald. Chris Brooker picked up the lone Gryphon goal with an assist to Baird.
CP Allan went on to win provincials, defeating the Lockview Dragons 2-1 in the championship game.
