The Pictou County Subway Selects bantam A girls are hosting Nova Scotia Provincials at the Hector Arena beginning Friday morning.

“This is what we have been working for all year,” said Subway coach Brad Dunbar. “The girls have had provincials in the back of their minds for months and they plan to bring their best game to the rink this weekend.”

Participating teams in the bantam A female provincials include the Pictou County Subway Selects, Antigonish Bulldogs, Cape Breton West Islanders, Halifax Hawks and Yarmouth Mariners.

The tournament begins Friday at 11 a.m. with the first match up between Pictou County and Antigonish. Hour and a half games will continue throughout the day with opening ceremonies at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Selects face off at 8:30 a.m. against the Yarmouth Mariners and a skills competition will take place at 2:30 p.m. Closing ceremonies will be held at 7:30 p.m. and the championship game between the first and second place team will take place Sunday at 11 a.m.

The majority of these teams have all played each other throughout the year or at tournaments so they are prepared for some competitive games.

“All of the teams coming to provincials are well matched,” he said. “They have earned their spot here and intend to work hard to go home with the gold medal and Nova Scotia banner. “

He said the public is encouraged to attend the games and skills competition to cheer on the hometown team.

“Playing provincials in your hometown rink in front of your own crowd makes a big difference to the players and their success,” he said.
