The Pictou County Lightning bantam boys fought their way to a fourth place finish in Division 3 provincials in Truro over the weekend. Pictou County Lightning finished fourth in bantam boys Division 3 provincials on the weekend in Truro.
The recently-formed team finished first in its pool in the nine-team competition, ending the weekend with two wins and three losses. The Lightning lost 72-69 to the Dartmouth Lakers in the final seconds of an overtime game and Colchester Basketball Association defeated them 46-44, getting the winning basket with seconds to go. Pictou County defeated Yarmouth and Fall River, but lost by six when they faced the Lakers a second time in the elimination round.
Leading scorer and team MVP for the tournament was Jaren Johnson who had 33 points in the overtime loss to the Lakers, and led the team in scoring by averaging 22 points per game over the weekend. Johnson was twice named game MVP. Other game MVPs were Chris Gillin, Chad Russell and Matt Russell. Coach’s awards were presented to Chad Russell and Glen Cox.
“I am proud of how the team carried themselves and competed throughout the weekend,” said Lightning manager Erik Nielsen. “We never gave up, and did very well, considering they have only been playing together for the past few months.”
