The Pictou County Lightning bantam girls pose for a team photo with their bronze medals from the Division 1 basketball provincials held over the weekend. The Pictou County Lightning bantam girls captured the bronze medal at Nova Scotia Division 1 girls basketball championship held this past weekend at Horton High School in the Valley. 

Pictou County opened the tournament with a 44 -37 win against the eventual silver medal winning Saint Margaret's Bay team. Riley Sood lead the Lightning with 17 points, while Kaitlyn Biron chipped in with 11. Biron was named player of the game while Abbie Delaney was recognized with the hustle award.

In the second game the Lightning lost 56-47 to the Halifax Osprey. Sood scored 13 points for the lady Lightning, while Biron and Courtney Smith each added 10 points. Biron was named player of the game, while Lucia MacKay was winner of the hustle award.

In the semifinal game, the Lightning lost 47-31 to the eventual tournament winner Valley Junior Axewomen 47 -31. Early foul trouble was the downfall for the Lightning as they fell behind 28-14 at the half.

The Lightning showed their character as they played extremely well in the second half essentially matching the tough Valley team 19-17 in the third and fourth quarters of the game. Smith captured player of the game honors with a team high seven points, while Sood contributed with six points. MacKay captured her second consecutive hustle award.

The loss resulted in the Lightning playing for bronze against the Dartmouth Celtics, which Pictou County won 58-49.

Sood poured in 23 points in the medal game, with Aliya Fraser contributed 10 and Abbie Delaney added nine points. Sood was named player of the game and Karielle Floyd was recognized as the hustle award winner.

Sood was named Tournament MVP for the Lightning, while Lucia Mackay was named to the tournament first all-star team and Biron was a second team all-star.

Coach Andy MacKay was quick to acknowledge the contribution of all of the girls and was proud of how the girls represented Pictou County in this elite tournament.
