Atom AA Selects win silver at provincials

ANTIGONISH – The Pictou County female atom AA Selects ended a terrific season winning silver at provincials. 

The Selects goal of winning gold eluded them at the Antigonish Arena, losing 4-1 to the Valley Wild in the championship game last weekend. After a scoreless first period the Selects fell behind 2-1 after two periods with Lani Coolen scoring, assisted by Mia Coolen and Taylor Long.

With less than two minutes to play the Selects pulled their goalie, only to have Valley secure the win with two empty-net goals. Keighan DeCoff earned game MVP honors. 

The Selects earned a trip to the finals going 4-0 in round-robin play.

In the first game of provincials the Selects defeated the tournament host Antigonish Bulldogs 5-0. Olivia Fitt picked up two goals, with Allie Hood, Hayley Nichol and Mia Coolen scoring singles. Alyssa Fitt and Ashley MacDonald earned two assists each, while Jaylen Langille, Lani Coolen and Hayley Burke picking with singles. Hood picked up game MVP honors.   

In the Selects second game of the day, they defeated the eventual tournament champions 8-2.  

Lani Coolen earned game MVP with three goals and an assist. Alyssa Fitt had a goal and two assists, while Hood and Nichol helped in the winning cause with a goal and assist each. Long added a single tally.

On Saturday the atoms defeated TASA Ducks 4-1. Rory Thompson, DeCoff, Alyssa Fitt and Langille scored for the Selects. DeCoff has named game MVP.

In the final game of the round-robin the Selects defeated Cape Breton County 10-0.

Mia Coolen chipped in four goals and two assists, while sister Lani Coolen had two goals and three assists. Game MVP Jaylen Langille had a goal and three assists.

Burke and Hood had a goal and assist each, while Alyssa Fitt added a single. Olivia Fitt picked up three assists.

Three Selects were presented with tournament awards during the closing ceremonies. Lani Coolen was awarded the top scorer of the weekend; Langille won the breakaway challenge during the skills competition and was named an all-star forward; while Hood was named tournament MVP, all-star defencemen and winner of the fastest backward skater competition.
