NEW GLASGOW – It wouldn’t be enough to win by five.

Northumberland’s Katie Nickerson maintains the ball after a tackle from North Nova’s Fanny Bjerkas. North Nova defeated Northumberland 43-0 in their first meeting of the season on Friday. AMANDA JESS – THE NEWS

The North Nova Gryphons ended the first half of their game against Northumberland Regional High School just barely on top, but wanted a stronger win in their first meeting with their Pictou County rivals.

“I think we all knew we needed to bring our game up, so I think we all just tried harder in rucks, made more tackles,” North Nova’s Caroline Straub said.

Their efforts weren’t in vain, coming out with a 43-0 win over NRHS.

Heading into the game, Straub said she was expecting a high score for her team. Although her prediction came true, it doesn’t mean there wasn’t room for improvement.

“I think it was good, but we could’ve been better. We started off really slow. We should’ve played harder,” she said, pointing to catching and off kicks as areas they could work on.

Straub was the lead scorer in the game, racking up three tries and four conversions.

Keeley MacCuish was next in line with two tries and one conversion.

Tori MacCuish and Rebecca Taylor each scored one try.
