Pictou County Rugby Club receives donation to help with equipment

NEW GLASGOW – There’s no tackling, but lots of fun for kids involved in the mini-rugby program here in Pictou County.

Last year Graham Hayden helped get the Pictou County Rugby Club’s mini-rugby program off the ground. Meant for kids four  to 12 years old, the kids play flag rugby and other games to learn the sport.

They had 49 kids signed up last year for their summer program, which according to Hayden was 65 per cent of the total mini-rugby numbers in the province.

“It was a great year for us and I think it was just that it was the draw to a new sport for the kids,” he said. “Parents are always looking for things to get their kids involved in and this was just something new that we could offer for kids in the county.”

Registration for the 2014 sessions will take place June 6 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and June 7 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Pictou County Wellness Centre in the YMCA’s multipurpose room.

The actual sessions will take place on Saturdays from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Scott Weeks Sports Complex in New Glasgow beginning on July 12. They run until Aug. 30.

The cost is $50 per kid, but if families have multiple kids sign up the cost drops to $40 each.

Each Saturday they are broken into three separate age groups with kids four to six, seven to nine and 10-12 having separate instructors or facilitators.

“We’re anticipating our group to nearly double this summer after seeing how well things went last year,” said Hayden. “We had a great time and all the kids had a lot of fun. Most of them came from other sports and preferred rugby. The parents were great and overall I think things went really well.”

Earlier this week Jonathan Stone of Stone’s RV & Home Centre made a $200 donation to the group, which is expected to help with equipment costs.

“This is a substantial help and without it would’ve run short on equipment,” said Hayden. “Without it we would be lost, so we’re thankful for Stone’s helping out the program.”
