Between 450 and 500 track athletes were at the Pioneer Coal Track Facility in Stellarton Friday for the district competition, a qualifier for regionals which will be held at the track next year.

Kyle MacDonald of Spring Hill kicks up dirt after he lands a jump during the district track and field competition yesterday. The events were held at the Pioneer Coal Track Facility in Stellarton.

Trevor Boudreau, who organized the event, said the numbers are on par with last year.

He said the Stellarton state of the art track has become a regular host of district and regional meets.

“Districts I think is going to be here permanently,” Boudreau said. “The athletes whether they travel an hour and a half from Spring Hill, they enjoy coming here instead of a dirt facility.”

The rubberized track is particularly beneficial on damp days like Friday was when it’s hard to keep dirt tracks in good condition.

Preparing for this event takes about two to three weeks of preparation with dozens of emails and phone calls to be made to piece everything together, but Boudreau said they’ve got the  routine down pretty good now and there are volunteers from each of the schools participating who help oversee the events.

This year they implemented a new system for registering the athletes and scoring, which required a bit of an adjustment, but Boudreau said overall it was going well.

Regionals are scheduled for next Friday.
