NEW GLASGOW – Dave Whittemore apologized after he began to cry while thanking the businesses and individuals that helped the Summer Street Foundation raise more than $229,000.

“I’m very passionate,” he said, adding that he has been chair of the foundation for 17 years. “The amount that was raised is how much the community supports the good work we do here at Summer Street.”

Thirty-one teams golfed in a mix of sunshine and rain on Friday at the Abercrombie Golf Club, raising $229,105, their second highest in the fundraiser’s 20 year history, for Summer Street’s special programming.

Sobeys Engineering took the lead for most money raised by a single team with $46,000, followed by $31,000 from CIBC Wood Gundy and $23,000 from CF Construction.

Dave Wallace, chair of the fundraiser, noted that the organization that helps create opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities couldn’t be run on government funds alone.

“It has to be community based,” he said.

He’s been involved with the fundraiser for 20 years, and reflected on how much has changed, noting that they made $8,900 in the first year.

Executive director of the organization, Bob Bennett, said the amounts raised exceeded his expectations.

It’s not only the money raised that made for a great day, but the theme as well.

This year, golfers were treated to a NASCAR décor, including a few cars.

Local race car drivers Rollie MacDonald, George Koskulics, Donald Chisholm, Faber Mackie as well as 14-year-old Hanna Ranni dragster racer brought their cars out for the occasion.

“We were hearing it was the best one ever,” Bennett said about the theme.
