A member of the Pictou County Rugby Club women’s team gets tackled during their home game against the Halifax Tars on Saturday afternoon at Parkdale. Halifax won the match 36-5.
NEW GLASGOW – Up against a team that has caused them trouble in the past, the county’s Division 2 men’s rugby team had success over the weekend.
The Pictou County Rugby Club opened their season with a 36-16 victory over P.E.I.
Kris Works led the team offensively with a try and a conversion.
Steven MacNeil, Jordan MacNeil, Darryl Frazee, Stu MacDonald and Alex Capson all scored a try apiece, while Ryan Board had two conversions.
In Sunday’s Division 3 game on the road against Enfield, Pictou County came back to tie the game after being down 14 points at halftime, but ended up losing 41-34.
Scoring tries for the county were: Jordan MacNeil (2), Eric MacIvor, Roland MacInnis and Brian Ruston. Evan MacDonald had three conversions, with Works adding a penalty kick.
Coming into the weekend the women’s team knew it would be tough to defeat a Division 1 team, but played well in Saturday’s 36-5 loss to the Halifax Tars at Parkdale.
Scoring the lone Pictou County try was Isobel DeMont.
All three teams are in action at home next Saturday at Parkdale.
The women’s team host HRFC at 2:30 p.m.
Pictou County’s Div. 3 squad opens the day at 12:30 p.m., also against HRFC, while Caledonia takes on the Div. 2 men at 4:30 p.m.
