Colin White remembers skating on Pictou County ice and dreaming big.
He made his dream reality and he wants other youth in the area to have the same opportunity by giving back.
After a year off, organizers of the Play the Pros event in Pictou County are excited to be getting back in action this year.
“It’s just nice to see,” White said.
The event will be held Friday at the Pictou County Wellness Centre starting at 6 p.m.
So far everything is going great with plans for the event said Dave MacIntyre, who also played professionally.
“We have all kinds of kids signed up and we have all kind of auction items for the after-party upstairs,” MacIntyre said.
This year they’re doing two games with the kids but leaving out the game they usually had between local hockey enthusiasts and the professionals.
“We felt it was more important to do something with the kids than focus on an adult game,” he said. “It is for charity.”
Zach Sill, James Sheppard, Andrew Bodnarchuk and Brad Marchand are among the celebrities who will be in attendance to play with the kids.
Money from the event has always gone to help out with minor hockey costs and equipment for those who might not otherwise be able to afford it. In the last five years they’ve given out roughly $600,000 through covering registration costs and equipment. They are also going to be donating money to the IWK in honour of some local children who are currently using the hospital.
They have also added a bit of a skills competition in between the town games.
“The fans can watch the pros doing their thing and have a little fun,” MacIntyre said.
As always they’ll be having a silent auction. Items cover the gamut of hockey collectibles from signed jerseys and sticks to photographs.
For MacIntyre, it’s the kids that make it all worthwhile.
“It’s very rewarding to watch the kids have fun and do their thing.”
There will be no charge to attend and watch these on-ice events, but donations will be accepted at the door.
