NEW GLASGOW – The MacGregor Kinsmen Midget AAA baseball team is making their second trip to the national stage in three years after winning the right to represent Nova Scotia at the national elimination tournament held over the weekend in Hammonds Plains.
They finished the round robin 1-1. After losing 5-2 to Hammonds Plains on Friday night, the MacGregor Kinsmen arrived Saturday morning ready to play and beat Kentville 10-0 in the morning matchup.
Based on the tournament structure they met Kentville in the quarterfinals on Saturday evening, which they won 5-4. Sunday morning they faced the Dartmouth Arrows in the semifinal, which they won 5-4 in extra innings.
In the championship game against Hammonds Plains, ace Colby Russell was dominant on the mound. Russell pitched a complete game giving up eight hits, two walks, while striking out five batters.
Jordan McCallum and Kurtis Turner each had three hits, while Dustin Harvie, Logan Dowe and Devin Sanford collected two hits apiece. They won 6-1, with Russell going 2-0 in the tournament. McCallum was 15-20 at the plate.
Nationals will be held Aug. 14-18 in Magog, Que.
