Pictou County wins Homecoming Tourney as hosts

STELLARTON – In dominating fashion the Pictou County Albions reclaimed their Homecoming Tournament title.

Sunday afternoon Wesley Moser led his team on the mound with a one-hit complete game victory over the Eastern Passage Pirates. He got some help from the bats with Tim Chaisson’s solo homerun in the second inning opening the scoring. In the fourth Tyler Day’s two-run single and an RBI single from Matt Purdy gave the Albions a 4-0 lead, which they held onto for the final three innings.

“I felt pretty good,” said Moser about his shutout performance. “I had my good stuff today and everything was working for me.”

The Albions opened the weekend with a 4-3 victory over the Pirates on Friday night. Chaisson led the way offensively with an RBI single in the fifth and a walk-off two-run home run in the seventh. Shane Dupuis also had an RBI single in the fifth, while Nathan Furler was the winning pitcher.

In their second game of the tournament they defeated the Halifax Outlaws 16-1 in four innings. Corey Baird pitched a complete game, giving up one earned run. Matt Noiles was three-for-three at the plate with three runs and a homerun.

In their final round-robin game they shutout the Pictou County Cardinals 11-0 on Saturday afternoon. Craig Murray picked up the win on the mound and had nine strikeouts.

The tournament victory is an important one after losing their title to Eastern Shore last season.

“It’s a good one, but the next one is the big one, provincials, that’s what we want,” said Moser. “I think we got a pretty good shot at it here again. Hopefully we’ll get back to the winning ways.”
