The Pictou County Rugby Club’s Division 3 men tied Eastern Shore 17-17 on Thursday night in New Glasgow, moving their record to 2-1-2.
After holding the lead for the majority of the game, a try and conversion by Eastern Shore with just over 10 minutes remaining knotted things up, which is where the game would finish.
Ken Briggs, Ryan Board and Josh Mullholland all scored tries for Pictou County, while Evan MacDonald kicked one conversion.
“I thought we played okay, but our defence wasn’t good enough,” said coach Scott Taylor. “We weren’t making our up tackles and that’s how their big guys got so far down the field. We’ll have to work on that up defence to get up in their faces quicker. We have some fast guys, so we need to use our speed to get into their backfield. We can’t let them come to us to make the tackles.
“That’s what we’re going to be challenging them to do over the weekend.”
This weekend all three Pictou County rugby teams are in action at home. On Saturday the women’s team open the day with their playoff semifinal against Truro at 11 a.m.
The men’s Division 2 team play the Valley Bulldogs at 1 p.m. with the Division 3 team rounding out the day against Riverlake at 3 p.m.
On Sunday the Division 3 team will also be home against Halifax Rugby Club. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. All games are at the Scott Weeks Sports Complex in New Glasgow.
“We’re hoping to get two five-point wins,” said Taylor about the Division 3 games over the weekend. “We want to get at least four tries to give us those bonus points to help solidify a higher playoff spot.”
Currently Pictou County is three points back of Enfield RFC for first in the Division 3 league. Teams get four points for a win and bonus points for scoring four tries or more. They also receive a close game bonus for losing by seven points or less.
