Club purchases former Pictou County YMCA building

NEW GLASGOW – Wendy Cruickshank, head coach of the Pictou County Gymnastics Club, said their new location opens the doors to bigger and better things.

Wendy Cruickshank, head coach of the Pictou County Gymnastics Club, works with Logan Walsh during the club’s first competitive training session in their new location at the former Pictou County YMCA building in New Glasgow. In the background Brady Kennedy practises on the rings, while Lindsey Wilson and Lainey Smith practise handstands.

Having existed as a club in Pictou County for five years, they spent the last three years in their Stellarton location on Queen Street. On Friday they started moving things over to the former Pictou County YMCA location in New Glasgow with their first day of competitive training being Tuesday.

Their mats and equipment are all set up in the gymnasium portion of the former YMCA. They hope other non-profit recreation or sport groups will rent the other spaces in the future.

“This (space) allows us to have bigger classes, to have two groups instead of one,” she said. “We’re able to set up equipment that we’ve had in storage for two years, fully set up the rings, have a full spring floor and have seven strips of floor instead of three-and-a-half.”

She said they will be able to add 150 more spots in their classes, which will address the more than 100 kids who have been turned away since last September. Having extra equipment and space also allows them to be able to do more work with both the advanced and beginner groups.

Next week, Monday, Aug. 25, they will be holding registration for their 10-week fall programs from 6 to 8 p.m. at their Frederick Street location in New Glasgow.

They are accepting cash or cheque only, first-come, first-served. Classes available for registration are kindergym (18 months to three years old), pre-school (three years to school age) and recreational (school age to 13 years old). There are also advanced rec and intermediate classes by invitation.

“It’s a dream come true to have what we need to train at a competitive level or possibly to have competitions here,” said Cruickshank who has been involved with gymnastics for 37 years. “Now we’ll look to grow from here. We’re looking forward to what the future will bring for the club.”

Is there a place to find out a proposed schedule? I would hate to go and wait for hours to sign up to just to find out the time will not work. Looking at the 3 - school age group.
