ALMA - Brandon States scored two goals and Keith MacLeod had the other as the Northumberland Regional High School Nighthawks drew first blood in their regional playoff series against the CEC Cougars.
In a game played Wednesday at the Alma school, the Nighthawks built up a 3-0 lead and held on for a 3-1 victory.
The teams were fairly even until the 'Hawks struck for two goals. "They scored a couple of goals and we didn't get much of an attack going," said Cougars' coach Jay Foster.
NRHS made it 3-0 in the second half, before Sandy Hunter got CEC on the scoreboard, a goal that could mean a lot heading into today's second game of the two-game total goal series. "We needed that one," said Foster.
NRHS coach Don Dooley cautioned that his team can't go into today's game overconfident, just because they'll enjoy a two-goal advantage when the game starts.
"We can't allow ourselves to do that," he said. "That would be very dangerous. They are very tough a home."
Today's game is in Truro at the CEC field.
