TRENTON - The Pictou County Junior Scotians have no idea how to win the easy way.
Not that it matters much. Wins are wins, and if they can keep doing things in breathtaking fashion, everybody (except the opposition) leaves Trenton rink a happy camper.
Last night was just another tension-packed game, with Pictou?County rallying to defeat the Antigonish Bulldogs 3-2. The winning goal was scored by Millbrook's Fraser Roddick with just 9.9. seconds remaining on the clock.
The win gives the Scotians a 1-0 lead in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League semifinal series.
"(Nick Dewar) won the face-off pretty clean, and I just got a clean shot off and got lucky, I guess," Roddick said of the winning goal. "We've got a lot of character on this team, we go real deep on the forwards and defence."
Character and depth aside, things looked a little bleak when Nick Allard gave Antigonish a 2-1 lead in the third period. The Bulldogs proved to be a slick team, more methodical and pass-orientated the Strait Pirates, whom the Scotians dispatched in the first round.
Fortunately, Neil Pashkoski evened things up in the third, setting the stage for a dramatic winner.
"We played pretty good up until the third, but we can't be undisciplined and take penalties," said Pictou?County coach George Frazee, who noted Antigonish scored twice on the power play. "We're the comeback kids, I guess."
Game 2 is Sunday at 7:30 p.m. in Trenton.
