NEW GLASGOW - As far as Allan Jankov was concerned, it seemed appropriate that a girls' basketball tournament should have an entirely female refereeing staff.
And so he made sure all four referees officiating the North Nova Classic Basketball Tournament on Saturday were female.
So why, exactly, is this unique?
It's unique, says Jankov, because here in Nova Scotia, female referees are quite rare.
In fact, of the approximately 270 basketball referees in the province. Only a quarter of them are women.
Locally, there are only eight female basketball referees in Pictou County and Antigonish.
By having an all-female officiating team, Jankov hopes to inspire more women to get involved.
"Hopefully this will encourage more women to get into (the business)," says Jankov, who assigns the referees for Pictou County, Antigonish and parts of Guysborough County.
The tournament referees, (Judy Murray, Ruth Ann Murray, Amy McLean and Shauna Poirier,) give Jankov credit for his "fair" approach to the game.
"When I started refereeing 18 years ago, there were no other female referees in this county," Judy Murray says.
"(But) with Allan in charge, if you can do the job you get the job."

THERE IS NOTHING MORE REFRESHING THAN SEEING THE APPROPIATE SEX DOING THEIR OWN GAMES.
iN FACT, THE CAUSE OF SO FEW OFFICIALS IS THE ABUSE THEY RECEIVE WHEN THEY STEP OUT OF THEIR CATEGORY.
    wAY TO GO ASSIGNOR.
