The ups and downs have continued into the new year for the Weeks Jr A Crushers.
Although the team is 4-2 for the month, last Saturday's 7-0 loss has me second-guessing my post-season goals.
While Truro is a great team, I feel that we are very close to them. At one point in the game we out shot them 17-9 and trailed 3-0.
Mistakes in the second half of the season are more costly than in the first half and that was exploited well by our neighbours from Colchester County. They capitalized on every mistake including scoring two short-handed goals on our slumping powerplay.
The Crushers continue to struggle against the top two teams in the league with a combined 2-8-1 record against Woodstock and Truro. The positive to that is we are 19-5 against the remaining eight teams in the MJAHL.
The Crushers managed to make it three wins in three attempts against former coach Troy Ryan and the Halifax Lions. Another former player played the hero role as Mathieu Boudreau scored a power play goal 54 seconds into overtime to send the Crusher faithful home happy.
Last week, captain Geoff Hum scored against his former coach in overtime for a road win. Midget callup Brent Turnbull scored his first of many junior goals in the 2-1 win. Justin Collier picked up the win for the Black and Red in the rare Tuesday night home game.
The Crushers hit the road for a big test this week with three games in four nights and lots of miles on the bus.
On Thursday, the Crushers visit the Miramichi Timberwolves, who sit in second place in the Meek with 46 points. The Timberwolves ended Woodstock's streak at 33 games without a regulation loss last week and have been hot of late.
On Friday, the Crushers continue their Northern New Brunswick trip with a date with the Campbellton Tigers. The team will arrive back into the county long enough to participate in Saturday's Toll Fundraiser in support of Haiti before hitting the road Sunday for a key divisional matchup with Bridgewater. The Crushers return to the JBM Stadium next Thursday as they face the Yarmouth Mariners at 7:30 p.m.
