NEW GLASGOW - The Weeks Jr. A Crushers defeated the Yarmouth Mariners 6-5 last night at home.
It's a win, but not the kind head coach Troy Dumville wants to see from his team this close to the playoffs.
"Up 4-2, that game should have finished 6-2," Dumville said. "Not us. We finished 6-5. We've been there all year. We let teams hang around until the very end of hockey games."
With less than 40 days until the playoffs start, Dumville said he wants to see his team perform at the level he knows they're capable of.
"We've got 40 days to pick up our slack and really focus on being a playoff team," he said. "Right now we're not there. If the playoffs opened tomorrow we might get through the first round. There are no guarantees of that. So we need 40 days of commitment to getting better."
Far too often the Crushers get a lead and become complacent, Dumville said.
"We go and we'll get a two-goal lead and we play differently," he said. "You watch us. Game in and game out, it's been that way since game number one of the season."
That said, there were some good things about the game.
For the third game in a row the Crushers have scored six goals.
"We went through a drought there where we scored basically four goals in four games, now we've scored 18 in three," he said.
Adam Chipman seems to have be developing a chemistry with his new team since being acquired from Amherst. He had a goal and two assists in last night's game.
"Chipman's a steady player. He comes and competes hard. He got rewarded tonight," Dumville said. "He's a guy that since he came here, I can't complain. He doesn't take a shift off."
Chipman said he feels comfortable with his new teammates.
"I think we're doing good," he said. "Now we've got to watch the defensive side."
Dumville also pointed to a need for improvement on the blue line.
"We're still making too many mistakes at this time in the year," he said.
The team does have a couple of new guys in the D-zone though and they have been testing out new combinations on the backend which could contribute to some of the mistakes.
"You can chalk it up to new guys or you can chalk it up to whatever," Dumville said. "But we show signs of brilliance and that's the frustrating part as a coach. It's not the systems we have in place, it's the commitment to those systems for 60 minutes a night."

Very lack-lustre effort against a far weaker team...Dear Mr. Noseworthy....you are 6 feet tall and 200 pounds, go out and hit somebody, your lack of effort caused 2 goals against last night. Then you were seen telling Bennett how to play, maybe with the heart and effort he displayed you should be asking him how to play.
Once again the lack of support of the people in the building doesn't do any favours to the team and their energy level...can't wait to go to the other teams arena during the playoffs to hear some excitement in the stands. -

The defence contributed to most of the goals and the plays to get the goals last night Maybe Dumville can get the forwards to backcheck and relize that when the other team has the puck everyone is on the defence.

Maybe if your not going to support your own team, you should sit down with the Yarmouth fans and support them, Yelling out to a player of the team your suppose to be supporting is not only wrong but for a fan who is there trying to watch a game and support the young guys I find disturbing.
