TRENTON - The Pictou County Scotians hope to sink the Port Hawkesbury Strait Pirates this Sunday in Trenton.
Fresh off a couple wins the Pirates are perhaps a bit overconfident, said head coach George Frazee.
"They're on a high here," Frazee said. "I think we need to knock them off their high horse."
The last time the Scotians played the Pirates at home they lost 6-1. But the Scotians came back to beat them within a week in a shootout on the road.
This Sunday will be a tough game, Frazee admits and it will be a test of where they are as a team.
Against a high scoring team like the Pirates it will be important for the Scotians to play a strong defensive game and keep to the roles that they're asked to do.
"They've got a lot of power up front," Frazee said.
By limiting their scoring chances he hopes his players will be able to frustrate the Pirates and open up opportunities to score. If they become too concerned with just scoring and not defense they will lose though.
Melvin Day will be in nets for the game.
"He's a big body that takes away a lot of net," Frazee said. "He comes out and cuts the angles down and looks after the rebounds pretty well. There's not too many second chances on Melvin."
Forward Kirk Harris, who was out the last few games because of an injury will be back this weekend. Frazee hopes that with all the guys back they can start playing with more consistent line combinations.
A win against the Pirates at home is something that "could give us a little extra boost to start off the playoff season," Frazee said.
The Scotians have been playing strong since returning from the holiday break. They've won five of their last six games.
"Guys are clicking better now," said assistant captain Fraser Roddick.
He said that just getting some time away from the hockey rink and doing things over Christmas probably helped break the slump they had gotten themselves in.
"I think it helps," he said.
Beating the Pirates in the shootout earlier this month felt good, he said.
"That was probably one of the funnest games all year," he said.
He hopes his team can do it again on Sunday.
The game starts at 7:30 p.m.
