The Pictou County Wonder Auto Bantam AA Crushers thumped the Antigonish Bulldogs in a home-and-home series this past weekend. In Game one at Trenton, the Crushers opened up a four-goal lead in the second period as they defeated the Bulldogs by a final score of 7-1.
Brett Connors and Blake Robertson led the way for the Crushers with two goals each. Tom Hayman, Scott Graham and Rainer MacKay added singles. Assists went to Jacob MacDonald, Brandon Bell, Luke Grant, Graham, and Cody Johnston. Joel MacLean got the win in goal.
The return game was played on Sunday in Antigonish at the Arena. Although the match was chippy and penalty-filled, the Crushers prevailed by a score of 4-3. Johnston, Connors, Noah Chisholm and Brett Rogers scored singles for the Crushers. Assists went to Alex Halliday, Connors, Dallin Bean, Hayman and Johnston. Crusher Marshall MacNeill took the win between the pipes.
In preparation for some upcoming tournament play and the pending Provincials being held in Trenton, the Crushers left Antigonish and headed immediately to Port Hawkesbury for a match against the Pirates at the Civic Center. Facing a tough, fast opponent with just two lines, Pictou County would have to dig deep to show their mettle and dig deep they did. After giving up the first goal to the Pirates early on, the Crushers managed to tie it minutes later.
Hayman scored assisted by Brandon Bell and Johnston. The Pirates would add two more, however, before the second intermission to go up 3-1. The Crushers came out hard in the third and Connors made it close firing home a rebound off a Hayman shot to make it 3-2. Pictou County kept it close, but gave up a breakaway midway through the third that the Pirates were able to capitalize on and take a 4-2 lead. The Pirates scored once more to make the final 5-2.
