NEW GLASGOW - Nominations for The Virtual Pictou County Music Hall of Fame are starting to snowball as interest in the project grows.
The hall of fame, a project of The News, was announced last Saturday and a call for nominations went out at that time. Since then, nominations covering a broad range of music genres are coming into the newsroom.
Names put forth by the public include Don Haggart, the Blue Cats, the Atomics and Wayne Nicholson - just to name a few.
A nomination for the Blue Cats recalls teen days.
"I loved to dance to their music when I went to Stellarton High School. They were great and played for many years in the 50s and maybe the 60s."
One submission for Don Haggart makes note of his exposure to the big time.
"Don has the experience of singing on stage with the biggest names of country music on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry and other venues."
A call for the Atomics to be nominated said the group was widely known.
"As in other groups, members came and went but their kind of music was enjoyed by thousands during their existence when kids danced and had fellowship."
"I'm always surprised by the depth of talent that comes from the past," Dave Glenen, managing editor of The News said. "It makes me proud that we can offer this salute to deserving artists and builders. Keep those nominations coming in."
Look for nomination information on page 2 daily. Deadline is Monday, Feb. 15.
