STELLARTON - When winter paints the golf greens white, local golfers have found a way to chase away their blues.
For the third season now, golf enthusiasts have been keeping their skills sharp during the off season by practising their swing at the William M. Sobey Indoor Soccer Complex in Stellarton.
Golf mats are set up on the indoor soccer field and nets are hung to protect the walls and ceiling.
Alan Nicholson of Pictou is a member of Glen Lovat, but has been travelling to the complex about twice a week in the winters since the program started.
"From my point of view, I like the distance because I can see the shape of my shot," he said. "I can see whether I'm hitting slices or hooks. It gives me some idea of how the ball is reacting when I hit it which you don't get when you have the little box and cubicle and the net is three feet in front of you."
Other places with the shorter distance it seems like you're just swinging for the sake of swinging whereas at the indoor complex, he said, you can really become a better golfer.
"That's the thing I like about this place. I can hit drive and I can hit long irons and I can keep them low enough so that I can sort of see what I'm doing and I can improve my game by coming here."
The cost is reasonable as well, Nicholson said.
According to the complex website $5 gets you a bucket of about 75 balls and 30 minutes of time at a golf mat. There are also deals though for those interested in going regularly. For $25 you can go six times and for $50 you can go 13.
Brian MacIntosh spends his summers playing with the Abecrombie Golf and Country Club. He used to spend his winters before sitting on the couch watching golf on TV and dreaming of the time he would have the chance to get back on the greens.
The complex has changed all that for him. Now he comes in there in the morning and takes a walk around during the community walk time which warms him up for when the golfing starts.
For him it's the next best thing to being on a real green.
"You can go to a gym locally or whatever, but you're hitting at a wall like 15 feet in front of you with a net and it's just not the same," he said.
At the sports complex you can actually see your ball in flight and he's thankful for that.
"That's what I like about it. When it's the wintertime, I get my fix for hitting golf balls," he said.
