You can forgive coach Jim Sloan if he's a little reluctant to talk to the media about his team this season.
The Pictou County Female Midget Subway Selects have a 30-0-3 record this year and as head coach he doesn't want to do anything to jinx them.
"This will be the kiss of death for us," he said sitting down for an interview at a recent practice.
Sloan has coached many of the girls on his team since they were first year peewees as he followed his daughter up through the Pictou County Minor Hockey program. They've had good streaks before, but none like this.
"Not this long. Never. Not even close," he says.
So is it luck?
"No, it's all skill," says player Marli Johnston. "We have new players that haven't been on this team before and they've made a good contribution."
The girls have no special practice drill, no special drink and no secret ritual.
"We just talk and Jimmy comes in and then we go," she said. "We don't really have any rituals except that our goalie (Lisa White) comes out of the dressing room last. She's superstitious."
With only three league games left in their regular season, Sloan believes skill is what has brought the team so far.
"I think we're probably just well rounded," he says. "We have good goaltending; we have great defence. We don't let in a lot of goals and our offence scores enough to win games."
The girls are also committed to playing hockey.
"There are a lot of other things going on in their lives - boyfriends and working and school work and things like that, but they're committed," Sloan said. "Most of them are here every Wednesday night for practice."
The majority of the girls also play high school hockey as well and between playing on two teams they probably put in about five nights a week at the rink.
"They enjoy it," Sloan said. "They get out and laugh and giggle, but they also want to win as well."
Because so many of the players have played for so long together, there's also a chemistry they've developed with each other.
"We know them pretty well and they know each other quite well," he says.
Not only have the girls won or tied all the league games, but they've also won two tournaments - one in Moncton and one in P.E.I.
As they head back to the Island next weekend to compete in another tournament, Sloan knows they can't rest on their laurels just yet.
"I find right now we're a little complacent and we're not doing things as good as we were or working as hard as we were," he said. "I'm kind of finding that things come a little too easy."
That's why it's good for the girls to play teams like Colchester and Antigonish, he says, because it forces the girls to play their best.
He hopes as they take on some of the top teams in the Atlantic province that the girls will step up their game.
"Hopefully we can try to get our game back on because we are a little bit derailed," he said. "It's easy to become very complacent and just kind of going through the motions."
