TRENTON - The Albion Amateur Boxing Club will host a 12-bout card this Saturday night at the Michelin Club in Granton.
The event will feature local fighters from the Albion club and serves as a fundraiser for their participation in the 2009 Canadian amateur championships, set for Edmonton in
February.
Stephen Bates, the 2008 Canadian bronze medalist in the 54-kilogram category, will meet Ryan MacGrady of the South?Shore Amateur Boxing Club in one contest.
Another bronze medal winner, Mark Prosper, fights Matt Whitford of Kentville in a light-heavyweight tilt. The two met in a rough bout three weeks ago.
Also, Thorburn's Shauna Wright battles Salene Best of Kentville in a 51-kilogram match. Westville's Norma Marshall, a three-time national champion, squares off with Kelsey Salsman of Berwick. Teale Joyce, another national champ from Westville, is on the card against Nancy Lacombe of Truro. The female contests continue with Erin Simpson of New Glasgow clashing with Nicole Spidell.
The card is a mix of pint-sized pugilists, national champions and larger sluggers. A match between Canada games hopefuls Evan Peel and Wesley Hardiman of Sackville is another one to watch.
"There's something for everyone on this card, with the mini flyweights right up to the light-heavyweights," Worthen said. "Anyone who is a fan of boxing is going to find something to really enjoy."
The action begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at Big Al's Convenience Store, or by contacting any member of the Albion Club.
