MacKay says final fight night a success

TRENTON - Jason MacKay capped off his career as a mixed martial arts fighter with a split decision win Saturday night at the Trenton rink.
MacKay said the Absolute Fighting Canada card was a hot and humid affair, but there were no injuries and the fans got their fill.
Against Winnepeg's Alex Sung, MacKay went the full 15 minutes. It was the only three-round bout of the night.
"I think the fans got a nice little ending to the night - got to see 15 minutes of slugging it out," he said.
"Him and I had some good exchanges on our feet and then a lot of the match was on the ground. (There were) a lot submission attempts, striking and reversals. It was a very wet and sweaty humid night."
"So, but I got a few bangs, several stitches under my eye - a couple black eyes and some nicks and bruises. But it was a good final fight."
"Alex Sung is definitely a tough, tough guy - real respectful. He and I had a real clean, fair fight. I couldn't have asked for a better outcome."
Crowds were lower than anticipated, MacKay said, but he chalks it up to the sweltering conditions Saturday.
"The crowd wasn't as large as I'd hoped. Not sure if it was the summertime, vacation or just the heat of the day. So it made for a warm night even inside of the building."
MacKay now moves on to the next phase of his involvement in mixed martial arts.
He says unequivocally that Saturday's fight was his last, and that he's ready to take on a promotional role to bring MMA and Absolute Fighting to venues across the Maritimes.
"People don't think I'm serious about giving it up. But I'm definitely serious," he said. "I've accepted what I've done and I'm happy with it and I'm going do the sport some justice through promotion. And I know I've gained the respect of the fighters and that's what makes the promotion is the fighter's support."
And he believes the AFC's popularity can only go up.
"There were some Ontario people here this weekend and they even asked me to take the promotion to Ontario."
