Dukus "Duke" Davis isn't the same boxer he was a month ago.
Two weeks of training in Ontario and a national bout in Quebec he considers the best of his career have transformed him.
His style is the same and his knowledge hasn't expanded tremendously, but his confidence is at a level it hasn't been before.
"I felt a lot different this time around," Davis said of his second appearance at the senior national boxing championships which were held in St. Hyacinth Que. last week. "This fight I actually felt more focus ed and I was more confident with my training and the sparring I was getting."
Davis is 6'7" and has always had trouble finding sparring partners in the province, so he took a trip to Ontario in January so he could train in the ring with guys his own size before going to the nationals.
In the end he lost 13-10 according to the computerized scoring, but for him it was a victory.
"My performance was so good it wouldn't have mattered," Davis said. "I wouldn't be any happier if I did win."
During the three-round bout he traded heavy blows with Ontario's Omari Henry in the super heavyweight division and knocked him off his feet in the third round.
Henry has a weightlifter build, but Davis proved he could stand his ground.
When the bell sounded to end the match, Davis felt he should have won, but didn't.
"By all accounts in my eyes and many others eyes we should have won this bout, said Duke's father and coach Tom Davis.
But Duke isn't letting it get to him.
Right now he has to focus on Feb. 23 when he will have a rematch with Henry to fight for a spot on Canada's B team.
Duke is confident he can win this time around.
He said Henry has a very technical style in the ring.
"It wasn't wild or anything like that," he said. "It was kind of just straight punches, but he threw in the odd one every once in a while."
To prepare for the bout Duke said he'll be looking for some people to spar with locally if he can find them and just try to keep in top shape.
Aside from that he'll just look back at his fight at nationals to remind himself what he's capable of.
"It's the best I have fought, but not the best I can fight," he said. "It's going to get a lot better than that."
