HALIFAX - Nova Scotia is looking to close a loophole that could allow all-terrain vehicles into protected wilderness areas.
Legislation tabled Tuesday would remove the environment minister's discretion to give permits to people wanting to take ATVs into a wilderness area for recreation, hunting, fishing or trapping.
The minister hasn't granted a permit since the early 1990s, and that was related to moose hunting.
Still, environmentalists have been calling for the loophole to be closed and were happy to hear that it will be.
Kermit deGooyer of the Ecology Action Centre said the loophole "was basically a ticking time bomb."
He said "sooner or later" an environment minister would start issuing these permits "and then it would be like the Wild West out there."
Other changes to the Wilderness Areas Protection Act would limit vehicle access to about 40 campsite lease locations in such areas.
