NEW?GLASGOW - Big Bird may have been the only bird not spotted by counters participating in the annual New Year's Day bird count.
A total of 16,860 birds, representing a total of 69 species, were counted during the annual event over a 10.5-hour period.
Counters found one brown thrasher, an unusual species, which was a new bird for this area's count.
Organizer Ken McKenna had been hopeful prior to the count that the brown thrasher, which had been hanging around near the Ship Hector, would reveal itself to counters during the event, and his wish came true.
Sometimes known as the brown thrush, these little birds are slightly larger than robins - around 25 centimetres long - with a light brownish-red wing, yellow eyes and a grayish face. It's relatively rare to see it in this area, particularly in January.
The majority of this count is done over water, which led to high numbers of aquatic bird species like Canada goose (667) and Herring gull (986) being recorded in the count.
A total of 16 counters were in the field, while 20 counters were at bird feeders for the annual count.
