Is there a better way to spend a warm sunny day than fishing? The people who came out to fish mackerel off Pictou's wharf Thursday morning think not.
About 40 fishers set up shop on the wharf while the tide was high. Bright yellow and red buckets sat with fresh mackerel in them, lines cast in and out every few minutes. Seagulls bobbed in the water, greedily waiting for some bait to come their way.
Justin Savage and his father, Clark, arrived on the wharf shortly after 7 a.m. By 9:30 a.m., Justin had caught about six fish. Clark wasn't doing too bad himself.
"It's pretty good fishing," he said.
James Clough used a homemade blend of bait, which he called chum, that consisted of dried mackerel, oatmeal, dog food and a secret ingredient he wouldn't divulge.
"You can use the lure and the feathers but the bait gets the bigger fish. You gotta have chum."
He said the catches get bigger as the day goes by.
"We're just starting to get the bigger ones. When we started off (this morning) we were just getting tinkers."
When the tide goes out is when the fishing really picks up, he said, but by 3 p.m. everyone had to pack up because a large boat was coming in to dock at the wharf.
The mackerel season will run right into mid September.
