Indoor sports facility opens in Stellarton and allows plenty of activities to take place that are traditionally restricted by the weather in winter

STELLARTON - From the sidelines, Andy Kenny is resting for just a few minutes. When he's not playing, he's cheering on his team, Truro's Black Thunder, as they battle the North Nova Dockers.
Until Friday night, the Dockers - one of two Pictou County teams in the Highland Soccer League - played all of their so-called home games at Bible Hill's Agridome. But this day is the official opening of the Highland Sports Complex in Stellarton. And this is the first game to be played on the brand new turf.
"We've already booked about 50 hours per week here," says Kenny, the administration officer for the Highland District Soccer Association, of the new facility.
However, he says people can still register for various sports and activities. Registration for the soccer academy is now open for players ages 6-11. There is also Highland Soccer League play. Rugby matches begin later this month, while an indoor driving range will be set up in late January. Squash clubs will be formed beginning in early February.
Not all programs require people to register in advance. Drop-ins will be permitted for the men's recreational as well as co-ed soccer games, he adds. The facility will also be open for free public access from Mondays to Fridays.
All program information is available on the website, www.hdsa.ca. Kenny encourages those interested in registering to contact the facility manager, Rob Stewart.
