NEW?GLASGOW - You can't play much better than the Pictou?County?Weeks Crushers did last night and not get two points.
They did everything a team could to erase a lacklustre loss to the languishing Halifax Lions, outplaying a very good Woodstock Slammers team at John?Brother MacDonald Stadium.
But the impressive display yielded only one point, as a late turnover allowed Woodstock to tie the game, then score the only goal in a shootout for a 4-3 victory.
"I can't really say anything bad about the way we played," said head coach Troy Ryan. "I thought we controlled the game, then we made some costly mistakes.
"What can you do? Find a way to avoid those mistakes, I guess."
The mistake in question was a turnover in their own end while Woodstock was pressing with the extra attacker. Branden Kosolofsky jumped on a rebound to bury the tying marker with just 42 seconds left, his second of the game and third point in regulation.
The goal spoiled an excellent effort from a team that just can't seem to create a lead comfortable enough to sit on.
A first period goal by Ben?Cameron was followed by Andrew Joudrey's tally in the second, putting Pictou?County up 2-0.
But the team couldn't widen the gap any further, allowing Woodstock to tie things up twice before overtime.
The Crushers didn't seem fazed by the late goal in regulation, controlling the extra period and generating several good scoring chances on Slammers stopper Curtis Black.
But when things boil down to a shootout, it's pretty much the luck of the draw. Woodstock's Brad Jackson roofed a shot over Alexandre Quessy's shoulder for the only goal.
"We played much better than Tuesday (in Halifax)," McNaughton said. "We had a meeting this week with the captains, and we tried to let every guy know what his role was on this team. This league is always better in the second half, and if we want to play the way we did in October, we won't have the success we did then. We need to keep improving."
Shawn O'Donnell also scored for Pictou?County, which fell to 24-15-5 on the season. Woodstock is
25-12-6, and will enjoy these two points, stolen from the jaws of defeat in the waning moments after being outshot 48-27.
Pictou?County returns to action on Sunday afternoon for a road game against the Bridgewater Lumberjacks. The game will be broadcast on ECFM 94.1. Their next home game is Thursday against the Dieppe Commandos at the Stadium.

Chance get a life! If you cannot speak your mind without hiding behind a made up name then keep it to yourself! I will take the time to reply to your comments. First, the Crushers do support Minor hockey. They have come out to practices when asked and come out to the skate athone fund raiser to skate with the kids, which I must say both The Crushers and the kids love! As for ice time, the Crushers do not take ice time away from Minor Hockey, the ice times are done with all groups in mind and if anyone takes time from Minor Hockey it is Sobeys with the Sobeys slam! Now for the new score board, the Rink Commisson is putting the score board in not the Crushers and all hockey teams who use the New Glasgow Rink will benfit from using this new score board.
I hope you have used this post to inform yourself so that next time you decide to shoot your mouth off you will at least know what you are talking about!! -

Man some people just seem to have a need to be negative. First the Crusher use ice time from 4 - 5:30 Monday - Saturday if they are not away to a game. They also use ice time from 7 - 10 Thursday nights for their home games. That amount to about 10 hours a week and that is only if they use all their ice time. The Major Midgets use about the same so intotal they use at the most 20 hours a week. Over a 7 day ice sec. that abouts to less then 3 ice times per day as ice time is 1 hour in length for minor hockey. Most teams use 2 ice times a week so that would amount to 1 extra ice time per team. In any case we will just get rid of The Major Midgets and The Crushers then our minor hockey kids, of which I also have 2, will have no local upper lever hockey to dream of playing for some day. This is the last I wil say on this as I m sure all you negative people will have something negative to say! So have a good day.

Hey Kirk, why don't YOU inform yourself. Don't bash the Sobeys Slam for taking ice time from anyone - it's a 4 day event once a year. It's a world class curling event that brings publicity to the sport and the area. Get over it.

I think you should check your facts about the minor hockey thing Kirk.Minor hockey in New Glasgow is using ice in all the other rinks because the crushers and the weeks midget took all the weeknight ice time. The solution to that though is a nice new 4 plex and shut down all the rinks but new Glasgow .

I think you should check your story again Kirk, your math doesnt add up very good. The New Glasgow teams are playing or practicing in all the other rinks because of a lack of ice time in New Glasgow .

Hey Lee, I didn't intend to bash the Sobey slam and if it came across that way I am sorry. I only intended to point out that more minor hockey ice time is lost to this event then is lost anywhere else. It may only be a 4 day event but the set up and removal time ends up taking at least a week to 2 weeks away from ice time. I think it is great that we have such a high quality curling event as this in Pictou County, just wanted to show that other events take away more ice time then the Crushers is all. Sorry I was misunderstood.
