Nova Scotia's dream of soccer gold died Friday night in double overtime.
It was then that Alberta scored the first goal of the game winning 1-0.
"It was our game for most of it, but then they came back and scored," said Kevin Hart of Salt Springs. "There was nothing we could really do about it."
Representing Pictou County on the team along with Hart were New Glasgow's Phil Casey and Durham's Kent Watters.
This morning the team will take on Ontario in hopes of coming away with the bronze medal.
The team was in pretty low spirits Friday night after the loss, Hart said.
"We were all very discouraged by the end result because we trained for three years to win the gold," he said. "Having that result is just kind of rattling."
While the players performed well, they just couldn't seem to manage to score.
"We had many, many chances, but we just couldn't capitalize," he said.
Today's match against Ontario will be tough, Hart predicts..The team was originally expected to win the gold, but were upset by Quebec on Friday.
"I think it will take a lot of heart and passion to win the game - a lot of heart," Hart said.
"They were said to be the best team here."
Athletics
In athletics, Nova Scotia's relay teams walked away in seventh place in all events that had Pictou County participants.
"We would have liked to have done better, but in the circumstances it's all right," says Luke Demetre of Abercrombie, who along with Randy Henley of New Glasgow participated on the male 4X100 metre and 4X400 metre teams.
Their 4X100 metre final time was 47.04 seconds. Their final time for the 4X400 was 3:21.54.
On the female 4X400 metre relay team, New Glasgow's Celia Peters raced with team Nova Scotia with a final time of 3:52.48.
Morgan Priske finished the 400 metre hurdles with a time of 109.57 in the consolation round.
Although he isn't coming home with a medal, Demetre said it was a great experience.
"I was just happy to be there," he said. "It was good overall."
Crowd support was great throughout the event, he said.
So what's he going to now?
"Rest and go get a hamburger"
